Author: Kimberly Cates
Average review score:

I absolutely LOVED this book!!!
I am a huge Kimberly Cates fan - and this book has to rank as one of her best!! The romance between Ashleen and Garrett is so strong - you really believe these two belong together. Both characters have overcome so much, yet they are still strong and able to care about others. The kids and their relationship to each other and the adults was heartwarming. And the bad guys were REALLY BAD!! I would highly recommend this book as well as all her others.

Over the Wall: The Men Behind the 1934 Death House Escape
Published in Paperback by Eakin Publications (August, 2000)
Author: Patrick M. McConal
Average review score:

Beyond Bonnie and Clyde
At long last a book on Southwestern Depression outlaws that doesn't dwell unnecessarily on the overblown exploits of Bonnie and Clyde. Of course, the infamous duo are covered here, as their former accomplice Raymond Hamilton was allowed to participate in the 1934 Death House escape from Huntsville of which Pat McConal has here presented such an expert and detailed account. But the principal planners of the break, Whitey Walker and Blackie Thompson, were experienced professional bank robbers as far back as the early '20's when Clyde Barrow, who never rose above being a bungling, trigger happy, semi-amateur punk, wasn't yet much more than a schoolboy. McConal presents the career of the Walker gang in admirable detail before launching into the definitive account of the Death House break. Interviews with old-timers and the author's own insights also paint one of the best pictures yet of the bleak landscape of Depression America as the backdrop to which men such as this rose to evil notoriety.

The Path to a Modern South: Northeast Texas between Reconstruction and the Great Depression
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (15 April, 2001)
Author: Walter L. Buenger
Average review score:

The Path to a Modern South: Northeast Texas between Reconstr
It's our hope this book will find a wide audience among those who enjoy readable history. The period and region has never been covered so thoroughly and in such enjoyable detail.

The book was ten years in the making and if there was anything uninteresting in the manuscript - it's not there now. Buenger examines the ties between Southern romanticism and Texas nationalism and how one bolstered the other. Myths are exposed through a quiet presentation of facts and anecdotes.

The symbolism, psychology (and funding) of the various Confederate monuments in the region - the most costly and elaborate in Texas are explained. If anything, the book create a curiousity to visit the (relatively) forgotten region of Northeast Texas.

The tables are clear and the maps are superb in their Spartan clarity. It's a valuable reference and it's also a book we can see being taken on vacation.

Great!
This book is really helpful! Unlike other books of its type, the information is clearly organized and well presented. The GPS maps are very useful, and driving directions are accurate and thorough. Also there are a number of great pictures.
I highly recommend this book not only for tourists but for locals as well. Looking forward to the upcoming New Mexico book by the same author!

Pecos Bill Texas Cowpuncher
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (April, 1962)
Author: Felton
Average review score:

A book both kids and adults can enjoy.
I read this book as a kid and loved it. I took it out of the library again as an adult (probably the same copy!) and found it every bit as enjoyable if not more. From beginning to end, the book is filled with a wry humor that never lets down. This seems to be a very complete account of the stories, including many variants (for example, the story of Sluefoot Sue's bustle is given with both happy and unhappy endings). The book should be far better known than it is.

This book illustrates the importance of the courage of the men in the Vietnam War. The author was a journalist in the war, and he records everything he sees and hears. Your mind will be filled with detailed scenes from the actual war, you might even find yourself checking your shoulder for mortars!
